A Nice Way To Spend Sunday Afternoon
Between our jobs, school and all the other activities that fill up our lives, we get precious little time to spend with the very people we work so hard for – our children. Even the weekends are filled up. If we’re working parents, we usually spend our Saturdays catching up on essential chores. That leaves us with Sunday.
Many families make a point of making Sunday the family day. Everybody usually sleeps in and then gets together for a nice big Sunday breakfast or brunch. Finally, we might all go out and do something together. Sunday afternoon comes all too quickly.
Make the most of your Sunday afternoon and bake a cake with the children. Young kids especially love to bake cakes. The extra motivation of having a delicious dessert to look forward to pushes them even more. It’s like a game to them.
Take all your cakepans out of the cupboard and let the kids decide what shape of cake they want to bake. The boys almost always choose the square cake pans.
The girls, though, will want to use the heart cake pan. You will probably have to step in and negotiate with them at this stage. You might want to suggest that they compromise by using the round pan. If that doesn’t work, flip a coin. To minimize disappointment, promise the losers that next week they can have the cake pan of their choice.
Now it’s time for the real fun. Bring the wood bar stools into the kitchen for them to sit on and take turns at mixing the ingredients and stirring the cake batter. Then, while the cake bakes, you can all get started on the icing.
Keep a watchful eye on the kids while they’re making icing. You want there to be some left over for the finished cake! Just to be safe, make a little extra, so they can all have a taste of their creation.
Now it’s time to clean up after yourselves. They may not be as enthusiastic about this part of the job. Make it fun for them and let them splash a little water around and they’ll be fine.
While the cake cools, the kids can relax in front of the TV. When it comes time for icing the cake, they will definitely want to join in the fun.
Finally, after dinner, everybody can eat the cake together. What a fabulous way to finish off the weekend! If you’re lucky, you might even have a little left over to put in their school lunches the next day. That would be a perfect start to their week!
